Issue VIII | The 8th Tuesday

As of writing this, I’m rereading what I believe is my favorite book, “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom.

Quick summary: The author, Mitch, finds out his old college professor, Morrie, is slowly dying from ALS, and they decide to meet every Tuesday to discuss life’s bigger themes and how dying has impacted Morrie’s reflection on life as a whole.

I recommend this book to everyone, and while I would love to get into discussions regarding the themes of each of their Tuesdays, the 8th Tuesday is what’s most relevant for the purposes of Issue VIII of The Trident: On the Eighth Tuesday, We Talk About Money.

I too am pretty early in my financial life, but I already see some of the ditches I fell into when I was first learning about what money means. Maybe that’s the issue right there: I was thinking about what money means.

Let me explain—better yet, let Morrie explain.

From Morrie’s deathbed perspective, the overarching issue is, “We put our values in the wrong things. And it leads to very disillusioned lives.” As this sentiment relates to me, I found myself too far over the edge of frugality. I denied myself and occasionally those around me the ability to use money to enjoy life. Everything came down to saving a buck.

As Morrie points out, I put my value in the wrong thing.

It’s not about finding the meaning of money. It’s about making money find a meaning. That’s what this whole personal finance thing can and should be about. We need to find a way to organize and deploy our dollars in such a way that they serve us as we look to serve what is meaningful to us.

The pursuit of this meaningful life is going to look very different to all of us, seeing as we all find ourselves in our own unique financial situations, different stages of our life-fulfillment expeditions, and the uncertainty of our futures. However, there is this common thread—it is in our best interest to try our best. It’s best for ourselves and for those that we affect, no matter how minimal the influence.

As my life continues on, I want the pursuit of what is meaningful to me to be my guide. To be clear, no, I don’t want the end result of what my meaningful life is to be the guide; I want it to be the pursuit of my meaningful life. The pursuit, that intentionality that drives my action forward, is what counts. I want to approach my life and my money in a way that will ask me to do my best.

With all that said, I want to help you do the same. While this all sounds beautiful, there remains the fact that we need to get on the same page as our money.
