Why am I writing and why are you reading about New Year’s resolutions about a month before it’s supposed to get started?
Because New Year’s resolutions are really dumb.
Most of them fail because people think that once the calendar reads 2026 instead of 2025, their entire lifestyle and the way they make daily decisions will suddenly change. This is just not how it works. I can’t think of a time when someone made a huge change in their life and they said it was due to their New Year’s resolution.
Can I tell you what I think is a better “New Year’s resolution?” I want you to start changing the way you navigate the world around you.
Here’s what I mean: I want you to take control of your decisions, your surroundings, the content you consume, the way you think, all of it. The way you approach your life as a whole affects what your financial situation looks and feels like.
Let me paint a scene: it’s Sunday afternoon and you’re sitting on your couch. The sink is full of dishes, the laundry needs to be done, the floor needs to be vacuumed.
You will get to it.
You find yourself closing Instagram and notice you’re sitting in the dark: the sun has set. The dishes are still piled. The laundry is still unfolded. The floor is still covered in flecks. It’s time for bed and the following work week.
You never got to it.
This same behavior applies to money: you’ll get to saving, you’ll get to investing, you’ll get to paying off debt. Then all of a sudden, the sun has set again and you ask yourself why it feels like you are never going to make any progress with your finances.
The best New Year’s resolution you could have is to work on approaching your life with proactivity, and to do that as soon as you can. Stop letting yourself drift along in your stream of life.
Get curious about money and get educated! Implement an automated system that has you saving, investing, and spending on things that actually matter to you.
Most important of all, take control of where your life is headed.
